Laparoscopic pyelolithotomy: An emerging tool for complex staghorn nephrolithiasis in high-risk patients

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effectiveness of laparoscopic pyelolithotomy (LP) for staghorn stones (>3-4 cm) in patients with chronic liver disease or coronary artery disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS In all, 49 patients underwent LP; they were divided into four groups, with stones in group 1 in the renal pelvis only, in group 2 in the renal pelvis and one calyx, in group 3 in the renal pelvis and ...

Hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy versus open splenectomy for massive splenomegaly: 20-year experience at a Canadian centre.

BACKGROUND Multiple techniques for splenectomy are now employed and include open, laparoscopic and hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy (HALS). Concerns regarding a purely laparoscopic splenectomy for massive splenomegaly (> 20 cm) arise from potentially longer operative times, higher conversion rates and increased blood loss. The HALS technique offers the potential advantages of laparoscopy,...

Successful Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy in Patients with Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia Treated with Romiplostim

BACKGROUND Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for large stone burden can be problematic in patients with significant risk of bleeding complications, specifically thrombocytopenia. This report demonstrates effective correction of two patients' thrombocytopenia, subsequently leading to removal of large stone burden through PCNL. CASE PRESENTATION We present two Middle Eastern patients who pres...

Hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy vs conventional laparoscopic splenectomy in cases of splenomegaly.

HYPOTHESIS Laparoscopic splenectomy (LS) is the procedure of choice for elective splenectomy. Splenomegaly may preclude safe mobilization and hilar control using conventional laparoscopic techniques. Hand-assisted LS (HALS) may offer the same benefits of minimally invasive surgery for splenomegaly while allowing safe manipulation and splenic dissection. DESIGN A retrospective review of patien...
